The term RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification that makes use of non-contact radio frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data. RFID technology is similar to barcode technology, but uses radio waves to capture data from tags.Tags are of two types: passive reader active tag and active reader passive tags. RFID tags can be detected as long as they are within the range of RFID reader. Some tags require battery, but most of the tags run without a battery and they work on the principle of electromagnetic induction.
RFID technology can be used in different applications, such as tracking of goods and persons, access management, museums, mobile banking, toll collection and contactless payment systems, etc. RFID technology is advantageous as it does not require any line of sight. This article includes the following RFID based projects with complete explanation for a better understanding of RFID technology.
1. Unmanned Petrol Bunk System Using RFID Technology
The unmanned petrol bunk system, as shown in the figure, is proposed to reduce human work and develop an auto-guided mechanism and to implement the task sequentially by using RFID technology. These systems are highly reliable and less time-consuming devices. The components used in this project are 8051 Microcontroller, RFID tags, Power supply, an LCD display, a Motor driver and an RFID reader.
The project is implementing as an RFID-based petrol bunk. Users use RFID card: Petro Card with RFID tags including user verification codes. These cards can be recharged at the recharge points. When a user swipes the card through the RFID reader, it senses the amount entered by the user and delivers fuel to the vehicle. Therefore, the amount will be deducted automatically from the user card and the LCD display shows the amount and details of the user.
The microcontroller stores several cards details and compares the data given by the RFID reader. When both these details match, it sends the control signals to the relay such that the motor operates to pump petrol.
2. RFID Security Access Control System
The main purpose of this project is to provide security to an industry by allowing only authorized persons inside to access particular loads. Some industries require loads to be operated by only the thorough and experienced professionals alone.
This system uses a microcontroller, an RFID reader, a lamp load, an LCD, a Relay Driver, Relays and other miscellaneous components.
In this system, an authorized person (with a valid RFID Card that consists of secured information) is allowed to operate the loads given. When this RFID tag is placed over the RFID reader –the reader scans the data stored in the RFID tag and compares it with the data stored in the microcontroller. If the data matches, then the load will be switched on and the relay will be driven based on the output of the microcontroller. This system contains a lamp as a load and the authorization information is displayed on the LCD.
3. RFID Based Passport Details
This project accesses the details of a passport holder by using Radio frequency identification technology. In this system, an RFID card contains an integrated circuit that stores unique data and information of the passport holder.
Similar to the above projects, this system also uses a microcontroller, an RFID reader, Power supply, a Status button and an LCD. Because the Passport verification and checking is a time consuming process, this system is proposed to reduce the time using RFID technology.
When a passport holder with an RFID tag moves the tag over the RFID reader it reads and verifies the data and displays the message on the LCD confirming the status as authorized. On pressing of the status button, the RFID reader retrieves the data after comparing the stored data in the integrated circuit with the data in the microcontroller and displays the output like name, passport number and nationality, etc.
