Know about Remote Control for Electronic Home Appliances

Remote Control for Home Appliances

Remote Control for Home Appliances

At home, we generally operate (switch on/off) all the electrical and electronics appliances such as fan, light, cooler, air conditioner, and so on through switches of the regular switch board. This manual switching of any home appliance is an inconvenient method for physically disabled or elders or even for normal young guys when frequent switching operation is required. Thus, this conventional manual switching method has to be overcome by an easier method of switching. This can be done using an advanced switching method like a remote control for electronic home appliances.

Remote Control for Home Appliances

We can use the unconventional remote control technology for controlling the home appliances easily without using the fixed wall switch boards. There are different types of remote control technologies such as infrared or IR remote technology, radio frequency or RF remote control technology, android based remote control, GSM based remote control, DTMF based remote control, Bluetooth remote control technology, and so on using different wireless communication systems. We discuss about a few real time embedded systems based projects with which we can design and implement remote control circuit for home appliances.

IR Remote Control for Home Appliances

As we discussed earlier, we can control all home appliances using any one of the remote control technologies. IR remote control for home appliances project works based on technology similar to the TV remote operation. This TV remote controlled home appliances project can be designed on your own by downloading our free eBook to design do it yourself kits.

The project kit of IR remote control for home appliances is shown in the figure which consists of TV remote (IR or Infrared remote) and electrical and electronics home appliances are represented with lamps for demonstration purpose.

The block diagram of the IR remote control for home appliances is shown in the figure that consists of the power supply block with transformer, rectifier, and regulator. Relays that are interfaced to the 8051 microcontroller using relay driver, IR receiver which is also interfaced to the microcontroller. TV remote or IR remote is used for controlling all the home appliances remotely, which are represented as lamps connected to the relays.

The power supply block converts the 230V into 5V DC for providing the required 5V DC supply to the microcontroller circuit. The user can assign the TV remote buttons for each home appliance and thus whenever the particular button is pressed, then the coded infrared data is transmitted to the receiver circuit. This coded data is decoded at the IR receiver circuit and the signal is fed to the microcontroller. After receiving the appropriate signal, the microcontroller sends the command signal to the particular relay to turn on or turn off the specific home appliance. Thus, we can control all the home appliances using the TV remote control.

There are some other electronics projects to design a remote control for home appliances such as:

  • Android application based remote control for home appliances
  • RF based home automation
  • Home automation using digital control
  • Touch screen based home automation project for remote control home appliances
  • Arduino based home automation

Android Application based Remote Control for Home Appliances

The remote control for home appliances using android application is an advanced technique of home automation. As we discussed to overcome the problems of conventional wall switches, there are different advanced techniques among which android application based home automation is most innovative method.

Primarily, we need to connect android application mobile with the Bluetooth device of the home automation kit. Then, by using the keys or buttons of the android application, we can turn on or turn off the home appliances.

RF based Home Automation

The RF transmitter circuit block diagram consists of 6V battery that provides power supply to the RF remote. 8051 microcontroller to which the load switches or switches of home appliances are interfaced. Based on the switch or push button pressed, the microcontroller sends commands signals to encoder block. This data is encoded and transmitted through the antenna of the RF transmitter.

The receiver block diagram consists of the power supply block, 8051 microcontroller, home appliances connected to the microcontroller through Opto-Isolators and triacs, RF receiver interfaced to the microcontroller through the decoder. The data receiver from the transmitter is received by the RF receiver, decoded by the decoder and then fed to the microcontroller. Based on the data received, the microcontroller sends command signals to turn on or turn off the home appliances which are here represented as lamp loads for demonstration purpose.

Remote Control for Home Appliances using Arduino based Home Automation

Remote control for appliances using Arduino based home automation project consists of Bluetooth module interfaced to the receiver end Arduino board. By using a graphical user interface application on the mobile phone transmitter we can send commands to turn on or off the home appliances.

Similarly, there are more advanced projects to design a remote control for home appliances such as home automation using digital control in which, touch screen based home automation project for remote control home appliances.
